As embodied in the Buddhist phrase “fires on another shore,” Motohide Takami’s works explore the discrepancies between viewer and object as their theme. The world depicted in his works is intentionally lacking in authenticity and functions as a symbol of ‘ignorance’ and ‘disinterest’, evoking a discomfort that is perhaps inseparable from the ways we gaze at everyday reality.
